Babam ve Oglum (My Father and My Son)
Date: 03-May-2013
No I was not expecting something very unusual. When the movie started, after seeing its starting I was sure it was a usual Turkish movie with a weak technicalities. Just then got myself wrong and till the last it was a different experience all the way. The movie would start to show its true color after almost the first quarter. The first quarter can be a little confusing and would feel to the audience on where it is going. A mind-blowing feel-good script, excellent casting and their more excellent acting with a solid direction made this movie a star. There are some technical lacking which do not hinder the watching experience. Catchy scenes to me are father's lamenting and departure of the son in closure. I could not help myself but giving it a 5 star in all the departments. When you have a true passion to tell a story then you would find interested audience and it again proved true for this movie. A very simple storyline which must have been told many times in Hollywood [master in making some super emotional film which does not have any art value] but sorry to say that never being told with so much passion and simplicity. Dear Oscar, please look around because other countries also make great films.

The Namesake (Revisited)
Date: 12-Apr-2013
The movie is made based on Jhumpa Lahiri's bestseller novel The Namesake. Though the book was intended to draw the picture of lifestyles as well as the conflicts over the generation who born here with their parents. But this movie took the part of recognizing life's gift and realizing the presence of loved ones. People accept of being an immigrant not only for their own need but also for their children's future. They try to give their children the best possible and thus accept their personal loss. The children though seldom accepts it or accepts when it is too late. Be it as an immigrant or a native, one should recognize the love and affection of their parents or loved ones. As well for parents they also need to understand the difference in psychology of their foreign born children. It's not only the fight for the parents to mix up with new culture and in a new country but the everyday battle for the child too to connect the dots as a regular citizen. The movie is well made with a great story telling capability. Sound scores seem very much inline with the movie's theme. Not many movies with this theme made with so much love and affection.
As US is getting more with immigrants and their next generations it is getting obvious that they will start telling their own story in their own way. So there is a higher possibility to get attention if you talk about these immigrants and their life. That is the reason more Indian American writers are coming up so are the film makers. The impact is much higher on the audience and also to the film business than it was 15 years before. And I am gladly seeing the film makers as well as storytellers are tapping this quite well. To me this movie put attention on every detail. The time frame has been shown with a great accuracy. Transition from 70's to recent time was done smoothly. My rating is 8.0/10 for the story telling and excellent making and acting.

My Sister's Keeper (Revisited)
Date: 06-Apr-2013
2 years of gap didn't change the way I felt for this movie first time. It gave me same feeling of sorrow and grief with a subtle feeling that it could not get better than this. This film is about one girl who tries to earn medical emancipation from her parents. How far is far, when it is too much that you should say goodbye? It is never easy to fight sanely, specially when your daughter is a patient of leukemia. This over-sensitive subject would melt your heart from the very beginning of the movie. You would feel a little melancholic integration with this movie while it starts opening it's plot. This movie is limited with few characters, only a 5 members family with a subject-line which gives a dark feeling. But the same time you will not feel it is suffocating. It is well maintained, well organized film with impressive character cast. When I saw Cameron Diaz as the mother of a teen girl I felt like a little restraint. I was curious on how this "There is something about Mary" star would perform. Her performance was very well portrayed. She made me think that she is well capable to act in a different challenging role than her usual. The other two main characters were the daughters, who struggle with their surroundings and pain. The movie's story knows what it is doing. It opens the door with a little press on the door knob and let you be in with a curiosity. The compromises one makes over her dream for her loved ones, is often very self conflicting. You will once act like an advocate for the little girl who wants to have rights of her own body the next time you will sought for her mother for keeping her another child alive. The interesting thing was I could not be the judge for anyone, the little girl who is only 15 wants to get everything she dreams of. Her dreams can be shattered into pieces as she knows her sacrifice can buy some more years for her elder sister. I also could not blame the mother who almost brutally was using her one daughter to keep her another daughter alive. Good thing was that the film itself made a good decision and pull off the end in a grand way. There is not more to say about direction of Nick Cassavetes, the screenplay, music all made the one and half hour a memorable moment to peek to the life of a distressed family. The best moment surely when the sick girl was looking at the photo album she made. This movie got 8 out of 10 from me for it's genuine storytelling capability, cast, subject.

Kolja
Date: 28-Dec-2012
I had a journey, a journey I would remember almost forever. The journey had a name "Kolya". A Czechoslovakian movie deals with a little boy and an aged man. It all started very casually, had a bad movie day while got disappointed with Jeff Bridge's The Big Lebowski. Then tried luck for Kolya as the storyline seemed interesting, had I known it would interest me like this! That 1:45 hours went like a roller coaster, I just didn’t want to watch the end though. A confirmed bachelor he who even didn’t care about himself took care of a five years boy, a great piece of contrast shown vividly. Little detailing of the movie was the most amazing part for me. If you watch this movie, you will be stumbled by some of the scenes which had an iterative effect at first but later you will find its not same - a totally different concept to give shock effect to the audience. My eyebrows must have been raised in these moments but later left with a broad smiley on my face. A little boy’s mumbling, naive acts that made the elder man’s life upside-down. All the credit goes to that cutie pie and matured actor. The director had a tough time to deal the cutie that’s certain, but when you are delivering something so marvelous, all your hard work and pain is paid off. While I read the synopsis I could understand the ending, still I was praying that this convention would be broken and some miracle would be shown. But again you just can not deny the truth…and this movie didn’t as well – which gave it an academy award in foreign language. No, probably it had not toppled down the position of Masoom from my fav-list which involves my past, memoir, smile and cry but it gave it a jolt – a jolt that was strong, so strong.

Masoom (Revisited, Review in Bengali)
Date: 26-Oct-2012

Khandhar
Date: 12-Oct-2012
Weekend it was and for me watching movies which are forsaken and side tracked. Watched movies of Mrinal Sen: Akash Kusum, Interview, Khandhar, Amar bhubon. I could not believe a man in era of 60s and 70s could make a film like this! He had a knack to represent things and character in some different fashion. They are differently narrative and finish with an uneasiness in the mind of the audience. Audience would not feel fully satisfied with the ending but would believe that it was what the film was destined for. I heard he has influence of European films, specially french in his works and it just proved so true to me. The camera work, sound, representing characters are very unlike of Indian movies of that time and I can now understand why he is compared to Satyajit Ray. Anyway by this I have watched one of the best acted movies I have seen in my whole life. Believe me. I don’t know, probably I could relate with the movie more and that’s the reason I am more interested in it? “Khandhar”, the ruined house is the movie I am talking about. One of the best performances of Shabana Azmi with a gloomy melancholy narration of past is what wondered me. The unspoken words, the helplessness, the unresponsiveness towards what is happening in that time set the film apart. Audience will feel a bit of dissatisfaction, a gloom over the plot. The main theme is of a ruined house where three friends come to see one of the friend’s ancestral house which is in a verge to be ruined. They came there to have good times and there could the story be ended but Shabana Azmi turned this table around and took the charge from here. It was indeed not a solo performance by her but she put the best on it. She is my one of the favorite actresses but she just broke her record and set it to a distance difficult to cross. She had been thoroughly submerged in the character and you can not apart her from the character. As a director Mrinal Sen had some experiment with the background and camera. He extensively chose some background focus and some sudden wonders. I am feeling lucky that I came across this film on my own-just by delving inside. Would like to watch more films like this in coming days and try to find more from them…Because films are made for a cause. If I can understand a bit of it…it is why it had been made!

Would like to watch more films like this in coming days and try to find more from them…Because films are made for a cause. If I can understand a bit of it…it is why it had been made!
Scent of a Woman (Revisited)
Date: 03-Oct-2012
Did you ever try to live your life closing your eyes? How did you feel? Uncomfortable right? The 1 minute of closed eyes made you so uncomfortable that you wanted to open your eyes asap. Did you ever think what happens to the people who do not have their sight? They are human, they want to do things like us..they like to enjoy, they like to ride, they want to be loved! Once who probably was impeccable shooter is now even cannot shoot the road on his own, the person who was used to show the world the different amazing colors..cannot brush his painting sketch! This is how it felt to one of the characters in this movie..a stubborn veteran who is dependent on others for his everyday life. A guy in his teen came for his rescue. They got together and saw some amazing wonders of life. All-time favorite Al Pacino as the blind man was in his peak. The most heart pumping speech he gave in the last part of the movie in the school auditorium, whereas most thrilling scene certainly be driving Ferrari in New York’s busy road! A very nicely depicted relationship with a young guy and a senior citizen, this movie could grab the attention of the critic as well as the mass. Did I say it’s my most favorite English movie?

The Shawshank Redemption

"Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies"...when a movie ended up with this magic line and you were sitting all the two and half hours without letting your eyes whirling somewhere else than on the screen...I bet it gotta be a hell great of movie! Wait, I am sure most of you are now wondering..this "The Shawshank Redemption" and after so late?! Yes saw it almost everyone's favorite movie list, saw it had the highest votes in IMDB, but really today I found the time to watch it. Probably this is one of the best ways to show that hope makes the possibilities. I started believing again: when you want something..something pretty hard..you ought to get this damn thing. Can you recall the movie never felt boring even when it dealt with handful of people and only one place: Jail? This movie probably was not just all-perfect but you would find very few blotting spot where it was not able to carry on..sometimes a little too simplified but still this is the beauty of this master-piece. Certainly very few of 90s movie were so rich in screenplay. The cast were superb..so are the catches..I am not overwhelmed or stirred up..but pretty moved

The Experiment
Date: -Nov-2011
When psychologist Phil Zimbardo started his infamous “Stanford Prison Experiment”, could he think it would merely last for only 6 days where he estimated a life time of 2 weeks? Totally out of the blue from the experiment held on Standford University in 1971, I watched the movie and well quite moved away! Though infamous for being a little inhuman and uncaring the experiment was a success. “Situation really gets people”, The guy with a bold appreciation to life, thinking himself as a ‘good-guy’, how long he can withstand the humiliation and ill treatment? Will be there any parameters or limits to be the 'Mr. Fair'? Or it’s all hoax, rather the animal instinct is all in our inner part? Why I like the movie is because it matched with one of my psychological agendas, that people change with the task or responsibility he is given. You may find a person very soft spoken, timid, but if he is given with authority and power the man’s behavior out to be changed. The person will be behaving abnormally with full of his confidence (with a hollow one whatsoever!). The authority and the helplessness have been depicted in this movie or in the experiment where the subjects were taken randomly and being divided into prisoners and guards irrespective of their social status or moral behavior. But the so called good behaved people who were designated as guards started acting like evil. And the same time the same sort of people who had been named as prisoners started feeling like hopeless and helpless. I would recommend everyone who has interest in human psychology to read the experiment here: http://www.prisonexp.org/. Over all the movie did not have the material to feel you shaken up but it had two incredibly talented actors who tried to pull the things up. Good move, but could be a better one though!

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Date: 01-Feb-2011
I would not say it was sparking..mid level..the poems rendered by girly-voice Farhan sucked, where poems were really good by Javed Akhtar. The movie could pulled up some parts where I found it really slow..I thought it was a Dil Chahta Hai material..comparing to DCH I will give it 6 in a scale of 10. Cast could be altered and that could do the magic..anyway...I really can't understand why this silly actress (!!) Kat joins the cast in any movie! It tried to put every end together and that's where I felt it dawdled..It was the first hindi movie I saw after watching probably Wake up Sid/3 Idiots...whichever came last...No comparison...Joya..take a deep breath and rethink what you did...hope next time you will not put your mom as music director in your film!

Away from Her
Date: -May-2010
It’s a film about one elder couple who have been there for each other whole of their life. Now one of them is sick and admitted to hospital. The dependency that occurs when two people live together, shared thoughts and dreams had been depicted in this movie. Astounding cast, Solid cinematography and brilliant playwright made it doubly treat. Have seen this movie three times. Started understanding the movie after first show. When you are with other person for long forty four years, you must be dependent on that person. More than a relationship needs to work here. I liked the enviousness of the husband while his wife, a patient with Alzheimer’s, was not able to recognize him rather showing affection to someone from the health center. The frustration and inability was properly shown and cultivated. Filmed in Canada’s Ontario this film successfully integrated the theme with the climate.
